OK. So now the year is over, what do I want to achieve next?

So it's now time for me to Eat my Frog!

OK, so I have taken a breath and have jotted a few ideas down on what I would like to look at developing in 2013.

Here it goes.... this is my list:
  • Convert some of our content over to E-pub mobile content
  • Learn how to podcast like a pro!
  • How to embed video evidence into our online RPL system
  • Mahara e-portfolios - Is it worth it for our students?
  • Play with Prezi, but that's it. Too many people are using it and now I'm bored with it.....
  • iPadio? I don't know much about this. I need to look into it....
  • Using social media in learning
  • Captivate and Articulate - update my skills in these softwares to create interactive tutorials and quizzes
  • Update the look and feel of our Moodle. It is not modern enough!
  • Look at mobile learning and video for our RPL system. What can our assessors and students use to validate their work? What are the best mobile apps in achieving this?
  • Can we use Connect Pro to authenticate remote students work, and if so, how will we embed this into our student files or online system?
  • Connect Pro 9.5 update due in mid December. Lots of new and funky features to learn and study to keep up to date. Not a huge learning curve as I have already reviewed it, but I am excited to use and implement the new features.
Stay motivated and keep going...........

The State of Elearning in Australia in 2012- Blog comment

The State of E-Learning in Australia 2012

The State of Elearning in Australia in 2012 - My comments and feedback.

Mick Gwyther posted this blog on Google + and I found it an interesting read. You may locate it at the following location:
http://connectthinking.com.au/elearning-in-australia/?goback=.gde_2116103_member_137920470

My feelings on this article are quite mixed. Whilst I agree that we are lacking a number of e-learning professionals that are readily available for hire, I do not believe (as an owner of an educational business), that it is impossible to implement e-learning, or become an e-learning convert and advocate.

There are a number of online and face-to-face courses available, and a huge number of consultants ready and willing to sell their services. However, it is up to the business owner to decide on a budget and to create a plan to implement e-learning (according to that budget).

Business owners must realise that this is a worthy investment. Owners and managers must be eager and enthusiastic with a positive vision of how e-learning will drive the business forward into the digital future. Without "buy-in" from the top, there will be no energy or enthusiasm toward the project, which often slows or completely stops the project. It is all about "Ethos" and "Vision".

It is also up to the business owner/managers to adhere to the plan, ensuring they allow for realistic outcomes allocated to the time and resources that are available to them.

To say that there is not enough out there is a bit of a cop out. In fact, there is almost too much out there, and in that lies a rather large problem.....

So......

As a new implementer and advocate of e-learning, what are my tips to business owners and CEO's everywhere to get started with e-learning, especially when there is so much to choose from?

Firstly, you need to believe in the value of implementing e-learning into your business plan and structure:
  • Encourage and demonstrate a positive attitude/culture toward implementing e-learning.
  • Start mapping out what you want and write a list of benefits to the business.
Secondly, start navigating the options available to you according to your business needs:
  • Decide on what you think will best suit your business (just a couple of ideas to start out with) and then start talking to people in similar organisations as to what they use and/or has been successful for them.
  • Use Google after these discussions to research these ideas, and any products that may be similar.
  • Start trialling products and software to see what you like the most.
  • Engage consultants if you feel that you need it, or can afford it, and/or get them in to provide you with a demonstration of their products or work that they have completed.
  • Attend e-learning and education conferences that have their systems on show. (This is how we found and chose our LMS).
You just need to start looking.... You will then be able to identify what you want as an outcome. Then all you need is a starting point to achieve that outcome. Remember, becoming an e-learning guru won't happen overnight! Start small and think big.

The following are my e-learning implementation tips:
  • Lead from the top. Make sure that you as a manager, CEO or owner 'buy-in' to the benefits of e-learning.
  • Encourage an e-learning culture with your staff
  • Don't have ridiculous expectations of your staff with regard to creating e-learning content. It takes time and effort to create great content.
  • Complete online courses to start to familiarise yourself with software and platforms. Lynda.com is a great place to start.
  • Attend e-learning conferences. There are also a number of free ones out there! Have a look at some of the associations as a starting point and see if you can attend their showcase events.
  • Apply for e-learning mentoring with ACPET and Skills Victoria or a relevant body in your State/Territory/Country.
  • Plan out what you want to achieve. Create a mind map of what you think your e-learning system should look like and what it should contain.
  • Write a list of the ways in which e-learning will benefit your business.
  • Bring in consultants to work with you and to assist in deciding what may work for your business.
  • Ask your students/customers to test your content/systems and provide feedback
  • Find out about free e-learning systems like Google apps and Moodle
  • Visit www.flexiblelearning.net.au to find out about funding opportunities and to obtain guides and papers that relate to compliance, e-learning project outcome reports from other institutions (what worked and what didn't) and many other resources.
  • Have fun and enjoy! Technology is great and you best get on board! What we can achieve is only limited by our attitudes and imagination.

ACPET & Skills Victoria Showcase

ACPET & Skills Victoria Showcase 14th November 2012

What a fun day we had with Sherrill, Mick and our fellow beginner and intermediate stream participants and representatives from ACPET and Skills Victoria.

This has been an amazing program for us and we are so glad that we participated. We learnt so much, were introduced to the most wonderful and supportive people and obtained a great outcome. Besides a great day I also added a few notes that I will follow up on later. They are as follows:

  • Fronter: An interesting LMS from Norway. Very modern, colourful and easy to follow.
  • One minute music: To add some interest to your content why not add one minute music? Search the web for other free downloads to insert into your content.
  • Fiver.com: Use the web to find someone to create voice-overs for your content. I learnt this at a podcasting course, but remembered it whilst at showcase, so thought it was worth a mention.
  • E-learning scholarship: Have a look at scholarships available in E-learning.
  • Use Reflection App or iDemo: To share your iPhone and iPad when presenting.
  • iSpring Suite: Create interactive eLearning courses with narrations, interactions, quizzes
and surveys directly from PowerPoint and publish for LMS.
  • Prezi: For fun and more engaging online PowerPoints
  • Screenchomp App
  • Share a great idea... Explain a tricky concept... Help kids with their homework... ScreenChomp for iPad helps you do it all. A simple doodling board, markers, and one-click sharing tools make spreading your ideas and know-how easy and fun! Just - Record It. Sketch It. Share It. - to create a sharable, replay-able video that tells your story clearly.
  • Khan Academy: Learn almost anything for free. Free educational resources and information.
  • Voice Thread on iPhone: Create and share dynamic conversations around documents, snapshots, diagrams and videos -- basically anything there is to talk about. You can talk, type, and draw right on the screen. VoiceThread takes your conversations to the next level, capturing your presence, not just your comments. Anyone can join the discussion from their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC -- anytime, anywhere.
  • Eworks have a number of free e-learning resources such as information on: Video production, wikis and accessibility issues.
  • Make belief comics:

Converge Conference 2012

Wow what a great conference! I learnt so much even though I had work committments that interfered with my attendance. Oh well...... However, I will detail what I did manage to pick up.

My First session

"An Introduction to Responsive design" was presented by David Drinkall from V2 Training.

Check out the presentation at: V2 Converge presentation by David Drinkall

He has a lot of Quick Tips for E-learning at his blog: V2training Quick-Tips

In his presentation he spent some time discussing how you save your e-learning web content to a format that would be supported by all hand-held devices. To achieve this, he suggests Twitter Bootstrap as a free application. You can also obtain web templates from Twitter Bootstrap.

For a customised web theme at a really low price, have a look at Theme Forest and in particular the Synergy portfolio theme

Other information I obtained from Tweets and attendees:

Big Blue Button online conference and meeting software is gaining more fans. Have a look at what is on offer by clicking the link above.

PCP Remote: The essential tool for everyone using Apple Podcast Producer for recording of podcasts. Podcast Producer Remote (PCP Remote) can control several features of an Apple Podcast Producer Server

This is a session that I missed when I was presenting for ACPET with my beginner stream fellow participants:

Customising your course to suit overseas learners:

A fun session I attended with Mick Gwyther and Leo included interactive iPhone app "Buzz".

Check it out at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gameshow-buzz-button/id368599059?mt=8

The final session I attended:

This session was presented by Julian Ridden aka "Moodle Man".

His presentation was excellent as it highlighted how you can make a Moodle course more engaging, entertaining and interactive for participants. Simple ideas like inserting small icons that were linked to an activity. The learner had to find each of these activities within the course, and once complete would earn a new "level" or "badge".

This is a great way to get learners involved and he noted that from doing this with his students that he obtained a 98% completion rate in that course. So simple but so effective!

In his presentation he also noted a large Australian medical organisation was able to improve student engagement from 15 to 75% just by changing the look of the course. I.e. Using icons to represent a unit or subject in a grid format, as opposed to the 'scroll of death'. Once each icon is clicked upon, this brings you into a new page with the course content. A great idea!

Julian may be found at: http://pukunui.com or by phoning 1300 466 635.

I spoke to Julian after his presentation to get more ideas on updating Moodle to a better 'look and feel'. These were some of his suggestions:

Use his theme "Rocket" for a modern looking Moodle.
Download and install Julian's Grid format plugin for Moodle to avoid the 'scroll of death'.
